A c.1890s German low-brow china shoulder-head doll, attributed to Hertwig & Co., with painted features, moulded black hair, cloth body, porcelain lower limbs and elaborate regional-style costume.

This small antique doll is a German low-brow china shoulder-head doll dating to approximately the 1890s, a style produced in large numbers during the closing decades of the nineteenth century. The term low-brow refers to the distinctive moulded hairstyle, in which the painted hair comes low across the forehead. This style became particularly common from the 1890s onwards.

The doll measures approximately 230 mm high × 140 mm wide when dressed. Her glazed porcelain shoulder head has moulded and painted black hair arranged close to the head, with a centre part and low hairline. Her facial features are hand painted, including blue eyes, fine brows, rosy cheeks and a small red mouth.

The head is attached to a stuffed cloth body. The photographs of the underside show textile-covered upper legs with porcelain lower legs and small moulded brown shoes. The internal construction appears to incorporate wire, allowing some positioning of the limbs. Small porcelain hands are also visible beneath the sleeves.

The doll isdressed in an unusually elaborate costume consisting of a long brown dress or outer garment, pale purple satin-like apron with cream fringe, lace and braid trimmings, multicoloured yarn flowers, striped fabric around the head and a dark textile head dress. The costume appears intended to represent European regional or folk dress. Without provenance or a label identifying the costume, however, a particular country or region should not be assigned.

The clothing is an important part of this example. Its materials and construction show considerable age, with fading, fraying, small losses and deterioration visible particularly around the brown outer skirt and decorative trims. Whether the costume is original to the doll cannot presently be established. I would therefore describe it as antique or early costume, originality undetermined, rather than automatically dating the clothing to the 1890s.

The doll is unmarked. The low-brow head has previously been identified as Hertwig, and that attribution is quite credible. Hertwig & Co. operated at Katzhüttein Thuringia, Germany, from 1864 to 1941, with doll-head production documented from 1884. The company became a prolific producer of china shoulder-head dolls and made examples with moulded black or blonde hair, painted features and cloth bodies with porcelain lower limbs. Both marked and unmarked examples are documented.

However, Hertwig was not the only German porcelain manufacturer producing china dolls. Other Thuringian factories, including C. F. Kling and Alt, Beck & Gottschalck, produced related forms, and many nineteenth-century china heads were left unmarked.

For this reason, “attributed to Hertwig & Co.” is the most defensible museum identification unless further evidence becomes available.

Hertwig dolls ranged from inexpensive children's playthings to finely modelled miniature dolls and are often recognised by their moulded hairstyles, painted facial features, jointed bisque limbs and distinctive factory markings. The company remained an important producer well into the twentieth century, and its enormous variety of small dolls makes Hertwig & Co. particularly interesting to collectors today.
