c.1935–1942 –Bakelite Mickey Mouse & Pluto Napkin Rings (Pair), USA

A pair of early Disney-themed Bakelite napkin rings featuring Mickey Mouse and Pluto in moulded figural form with original painted detail.

This charming pair of figural napkin rings features two of Disney’s most recognisable early characters—Mickey Mouse and Pluto—rendered in moulded Bakelite. Each ring is formed as a standing character integrated into an oval loop, designed to hold a folded napkin. The figures are sculpted in relief with simplified but expressive features, and retain traces of original hand-painted detailing, including facial features and clothing accents.

The use of Bakelite, an early thermosetting plastic widely adopted from the 1920s throughthe 1940s, supports a pre-war production date. The stylisation of Mickey Mouse—particularly the facial shape and proportions—aligns with character designs used during the 1930s and early 1940s, prior to later refinements in animation styling. Pluto’s form similarly reflects early interpretations of the character. While unmarked, items of this type were commonly produced both underlicence and as unofficial merchandise during the height of Disney’s early popularity.

Disney character merchandise expanded rapidly during the 1930s, with a wide range of household items produced to capitalise on the success of animated films and shorts. Napkin rings such as these would have been novelty table accessories, appealing to families and children alike. Their dual function as both practical household items and character collectibles makes them particularly appealing today.

Made from the following materials

Bakelite, developed by Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in 1907, was the world’s first fully synthetic plastic and became one of the most influential materials of the early 20th century. Non-conductive, heat-resistant, and incredibly durable, it was widely used from the 1920s to the 1950s in telephones, radios, jewellery, kitchenware, and children’s toys. Its distinctive glossy finish and deep colours—typically black, brown, red, or marbled tones—make Bakelite items highly collectible today. Authentic pieces can often be identified by their weight, warmth to the touch, and the characteristic formaldehyde scent when gently heated or rubbed. Bakelite remains a favourite among collectors for its craftsmanship, historical significance, and iconic Art Deco appeal.
