c.1965 Frankonia Toys Battery Op. Farm Truck, Japan

A mid-1960s Japanese battery-operated “Ol’ MacDonald’s Farm Truck” by Frankonia Toys, featuring livestock figures and animated bobbing chickens.
This brightly coloured battery-operated farm truck features a red cab, black chassis, green tray base, and white livestock fencing panels. The tray contains moulded plastic farm animals including a cow, pig, sheep, dog, and crate of chickens, with a hen figure mounted atop the crate. The side panel is printed “Ol’ MacDonald’s Farm Truck.” The driver figure is seated within the cab behinda clear plastic windscreen.
Frankonia Toys was a Japanese manufacturer active during the 1960s, producing mechanical and battery-operated novelty toys for export markets, particularly the United States and Australia. Japanese toy production during this period was characterised by colourful plastics, animated features, and musical or motorised action. Farm-themed battery toys were especially popular, reflecting post-war rural nostalgia and the global appeal of nursery rhymes such as “OldMacDonald Had a Farm.”
When activated, the truck moves forward under battery power while the chicken figures bob rhythmically, creating a charming animated effect. The combination of movement, sound (in some variants), and recognisable farm imagery made toys like this highly engaging for children, blending storytelling, mechanical curiosity, and imaginative rural play.
