c.1970 Little Boy Blue Ceramic Canister – Made in Japan

c.1970 Little Boy Blue Ceramic Canister – Made in Japan

A charming Japanese ceramic storage canister featuring a nostalgic Little Boy Blue farm scene, produced during the 1970s and retaining its original bright yellow glazed lid.

This delightful ceramic canister was produced in Japan during the late 1960s to early 1970s, a period when Japanese ceramics dominated the export giftware market. Featuring a colourful illustration of Little Boy Blue resting beside a haystack with a cow and lamb in the background, the design draws inspiration from the traditional English nursery rhyme.

The canister has a cream-coloured body with softly moulded scalloped sides anda bright yellow glazed lid. Pieces such as this were commonly sold through department stores and gift shops as decorative kitchen storage containers or nursery keepsakes.

The base is impressed with a handwritten-style letters believed to read A H or K V, but no manufacturer's name remains visible. This is typical of many Japanese export ceramics whose original foil labels have been lost.

Today these colourful canisters are appreciated by collectors of vintage Japanese ceramics, nursery memorabilia and mid-century homewares.
