This rectangular school slate features a dark natural slate writing surface housed within a solid timber frame with mitred corners. The timber has aged to a deep brown patina, consistent with early 20th-century classroom materials. Visible along the lower edge are the carved initials “FB,” likely added by a student owner. The slate surface shows light scratching and faint ghost marks from historic chalk use, typical of authentic classroom slates of this period.

Individual handheld slates were widely used in American schools throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
