Born and based in Dunedin, New Zealand, Jan McLean first captured the attention of collectors worldwide in the early 1990s with her exquisite porcelain dolls. With their expressive eyes, elegant features, and beautifully tailored clothing, her dolls became instantly recognisable—and deeply loved by doll enthusiasts across the globe.
Here at My Doll Cottage, we’re proud to house over 90 Jan McLean dolls, each one a masterpiece in its own right. From the dainty Lollipop Girls to the show-stopping Limited Edition porcelain beauties, these dolls are a true highlight of our display and a testament to Jan’s legacy as one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most celebrated doll artists.
Before she was a household name among collectors, Jan McLean was a trained artist with a passion for design creating Chloe and Pheobe in 1987 and shooting to fame later In 1991, when she won Dolls award for Excellence for Pansy at the American International Toy Fair in New York. This sparked the beginning of a long and respected career.
Over the years, Jan produced both porcelain and vinyl dolls, blending intricate detailing with accessible formats. Her work often reflected a European sensibility—romantic, wistful, and timeless. Many of her dolls feature Edwardian- or Victorian-style clothing, rich fabrics, lace trims, and charming accessories.
In our museum, Jan McLean’s dolls have a whole section to them selves. You’ll find:
